By Elections: The date of by-elections to be held in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Kerala has been changed. Earlier these by-elections were to be held on November 13, but now it has been rescheduled to November 20. This decision has been taken by the Election Commission keeping in mind the requests of various political parties and various festivals going on in the states.

Reason for change in by-election date

Many major festivals are being celebrated in Kerala, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh these days, due to which the public remains busy. The Election Commission has decided to change this date to ensure maximum participation of voters in the electoral process. Congress, BJP, BSP, RLD and other major parties had urged the Commission that voting during festivals may have a negative impact on the number of voters. Therefore, the Election Commission decided to extend the date of by-election by a week.

What was the plan of the Election Commission earlier?

The Election Commission had also announced the dates of these by-elections along with the assembly elections of Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Maharashtra will go to polls on November 20 and the counting of votes will take place on November 23. The election in Maharashtra will be held in only one phase, while Jharkhand is scheduled to go to polls in two phases, with voting on November 13 and 20, and the results will be declared on November 23.

By-elections were scheduled for November 13 in some assembly seats in Kerala, Punjab and UP, but now it will be held on November 20.

Why is the Milkipur seat in Ayodhya on hold?

The by-election to be held in the Milkipur assembly constituency in Ayodhya has been put on hold. The reason for this is an election petition, which was filed by former MLA Gorakhnath Baba. After losing the 2022 assembly elections, Gorakhnath Baba had challenged the election of Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad. Due to this legal dispute, the by-election on this seat has been postponed for the time being.

Conclusion

The Election Commission has changed the date of by-elections in these states to November 20 to avoid the possibility of low voter turnout due to the busyness of voters due to festivals. This step by the Commission ensures that voters do not face any shortage in exercising their voting rights.
