Kolkata Rape Case: The central government has accepted the demands of the doctors protesting against the Kolkata rape murder case. The government has said that it will form a committee regarding the Central Protection Act. The Union Health Ministry has assured to make every effort to ensure the safety of the doctors. The government has appealed to all the protesting doctors to go on duty. On the appeal of the government, the doctors' organization FORDA said that it will take a decision after talking to the representatives. There is anger across the country regarding the Kolkata case.

Representatives of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Resident Doctors Association of Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals of Delhi of the Kolkata doctor rape murder case met the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi and put forth their demands. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has heard the demands of the representatives and assured them of making every effort to ensure the safety of health professionals.

Government sensitive to the demands of doctors

The representatives of all the associations were told that the government is well aware of the situation and is sensitive to their demands. It was observed that 26 States have already passed legislation to protect healthcare workers in their respective States. In view of the concerns expressed by the associations, the Ministry assured them of constituting a committee to suggest all such possible measures to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.

Representatives of all stakeholders including State Governments will be invited to share their suggestions with the Committee. The Ministry requested the agitating doctors to return to their work in the larger public interest in view of the rising cases of dengue and malaria.
