Earlier, many women tore the resignation letter of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Let us tell you that Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had a plan to go to Raj Bhavan in Imphal to meet Governor Anusuiya Uikey. During this meeting, he was about to hand over his resignation letter to the governor.

N Biren Singh left for the Governor's House on Friday morning. Meanwhile, some women supporters blocked the road outside the Raj Bhavan and did not allow the CM's convoy to go ahead. After this, some women supporters tore up his resignation and requested him not to resign.

Violence flared up again on Thursday

Violence flared up again in Manipur on Thursday, killing three people and injuring five. Due to this, the speculation about the resignation of N Biren Singh from the post of CM intensified. According to PTI, woman leader Kshetramayum Shanti said, "At this critical juncture, the Biren Singh government should stand firm and crack down on miscreants."

In the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP returned to power by winning 32 seats in the 60-member assembly of Manipur. The BJP was successful in forming a government in 2017 by joining hands with two local parties - the NPP and the NPF - despite having only 21 seats as compared to the Congress's 28. However, in 2022, BJP contested the elections alone and managed to get the power of the state.

Who is CM Biren Singh

Born in a Hindu family in Manipur's Luwansangbam Mamang Leikai in the year 1961, Biren Singh was interested in football since childhood. When he was 18, he was selected in the Border Security Force (BSF) football team during a match in Manipur's capital Imphal. He was the first player from Manipur to play outside the state. He continued to play for the state team till 1992. Apart from being a former footballer, he has also been associated with journalism.

Biren Singh joined the Democratic Revolutionary People's Party in 2002 and won the assembly elections from Hingang. After joining the Congress in 2003, he contested on the party's ticket in 2007 and became the MLA from Hingang. In 2012, he won the election for the third time but was involved in a power struggle against the incumbent CM. Ibobi Singh was dropped from the cabinet. In October 2016, Biren once again took the risk and resigned from the membership of the Ibobi Singh government and the Congress, expressing all kinds of dissatisfaction. In October 2016 itself, he officially joined the BJP. In 2017, he retained his seat from Hingang and became the chief minister in a BJP coalition government. He is the first BJP chief minister in Manipur.

Violence started from May 3

Violence broke out after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Manipur. The Meitei community, which forms 53 percent of the state's population, mainly lives in the Imphal Valley. At the same time, tribal communities like Naga and Kuki constitute 40 percent of the population and live mainly in the hilly districts.

This is how it started

  • On May 3, All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) took out 'Tribal Unity March'. This rally was taken out in Torbang area of Churchandpur.
  • During this rally, a violent clash took place between tribals and non-tribals. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
  • By the evening of May 3, the situation worsened so much that the state government sought help from the Centre. Later, companies of Army and Paramilitary forces were deployed there.
  • - This rally was taken out against the demand of Scheduled Tribe status of the Meitei community. The Meitei community has been demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for a long time.
  • On April 20, an order was given by the Acting Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, MV Muraleedharan. In this, the state government was asked to consider the demand of giving tribe status to the Meitei community. For this, the High Court has given four weeks time to the government.
  • After this order of Manipur High Court, the Naga and Kuki tribe communities were enraged. He took out a tribal unity march on 3rd May.
What has happened so far for peace?

The Central Government had constituted a commission on June 4 to investigate the violence in Manipur. The commission is headed by former Gauhati High Court Justice Ajay Lamba. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, this commission will investigate the causes of violence and riots in Manipur on and after May 3.
