India China LAC Border - Consensus on the table, disengagement on LAC-negotiations continue
India China LAC Border: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks after several years during the 16th BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia. This meeting was the first face-to-face meeting after the clash in the Galwan Valley in the year 2020. In this meeting, the consensus reached to end the ongoing tension on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh was also discussed, which was welcomed by Prime Minister Modi. However, this consensus was decided even before the meeting.

As part of the resolution of the border dispute with China, the Ministry of External Affairs had announced that disengagement would begin in eastern Ladakh, under which patrolling would be restored in Depsang and Demchok. After 2020, the tents erected by China in Dempchok will be removed, and the Indian Army will also remove the tents set up in response. Chinese troops in Depsang will withdraw from the areas where they have blocked the patrolling of the Indian Army, and Indian soldiers will also withdraw according to the same conditions.

According to sources, patrolling will start in both these places in the same manner as it was before April 2020. It will take time for the situation to return to normal, and even in this winter, Indian soldiers will remain in their positions on the LAC. There will be regular meetings between local military commanders so that the monitoring process can continue.

After disengagement in Depsang and Demchok, discussions are being held to determine the frequency of patrolling and the number of troops. Along with this, talks are also going on to remove the buffer zone built at places like Galwan, Pangong and Gogra-Hot Spring and start patrolling.

The situation before April 2020 will be restored on the LAC only after completing the three main phases, disengagement, de-escalation and deinduction. At present, the first phase is going to be completed through disengagement in Depsang and Demchok.
