Thane. A father-son duo have been arrested for allegedly stealing electricity in Thane district of Maharashtra. The incident took place in Murbad area of Thane district. Police have registered a case against both the accused. According to the NDTV report, the official said that a team of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) had raided a stone crushing unit in Falegaon on May 5. After this this exploit was revealed. “Theft of electricity was being done remotely using gadgets that tampered with meter readings. Over 34 lakh (34,09,901) units total electricity theft has been estimated at ₹5.93 crore in the last 29 months.
A case has been registered against Chandrakant Bhambre and his son Sachin under various provisions of the Electricity Act, an official of Murbad police station said. He hails from Falegaon village in Kalyan taluka. According to the TOI report, the Vigilance team inspected the electricity meter of the crusher company on May 5. Investigation revealed that the crusher operator has stolen more than 34 lakh units of electricity for the last 29 months by installing a remote control circuit in the meter.Preliminary investigation revealed that the meter was tampered with and the electricity consumption records were suspicious. So the meter was confiscated. Then the meter was checked in the laboratory and it was found that by controlling this circuit with the help of remote control, the actual power consumption of the crusher would be less recorded in the meter. In this way, father-son together stole electricity worth crores of rupees from December 2019 to April 2022. A case has been registered against the accused under section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003.
