Indian Cricket Team: Before leaving for America for the T20 World Cup 2024, Team India's head coach Rahul Dravid will have to do the work which will decide whether he will remain the coach of the Indian team after the tournament or not. After the announcement by Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jai Shah a few days ago, the Board has now issued an advertisement for the Head Coach. The board made the official announcement late on Monday 13th May to apply for the post of head coach of Team India and has set the deadline for this as 27th May. That means whoever wants to become a coach will have to apply by this date. The board has already made it clear that if Dravid wants to become a coach again, he can also apply.
What will be the tenure and salary?BCCI has explained about the terms and conditions for the coach in its advertisement. According to this, the new coach will get a tenure of three and a half years, which will run from July 1, 2024 to December 31, 2027. That means the tenure will end after the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027. As far as salary is concerned, the board has made it clear that they will negotiate with the candidates on this and the salary will be decided on the basis of experience only.
BCCI kept these conditionsThe coach of the Indian cricket team, one of the most powerful teams in the world, will come with huge responsibilities and pressure and in such a situation the board has set many conditions to appoint the right coach. According to this,
- The candidate should have played at least 30 test matches or 50 ODI matches.
- Or should be the head coach of a full member test playing country for at least 2 years.
- Or has been the coach of any Associate Member team / any IPL team or any such league or first class team or A team of any country for 3 years.
- Or holder of Level-3 coaching certificate of BCCI
- And should be below 60 years of age.
How will the selection be done?Board Secretary Jai Shah had announced a few days ago that the Board will start fresh hiring for the head coach. He had also made it clear then that if the current head coach Rahul Dravid wants this role again, he can also apply. For the selection of the coach, BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee i.e. CAC interviews all the candidates and then sends its recommendation to the board.
Dravid got extensionRahul Dravid was appointed by BCCI after T2 World Cup 2021 and then he got a tenure of 2 years. Dravid's tenure ended after the ODI World Cup 2023, but considering the performance of Team India, the board had decided to give him an extension and kept him till the T20 World Cup 2024. Now after this tenure, most eyes will be on whether Dravid would like to continue as coach or not.
