Chandigarh Mayor Election: Just before the hearing in the Supreme Court, Chandigarh Mayor Manoj Sonkar has resigned from his post. On the other hand, three councilors of Aam Aadmi Party joined BJP. The Supreme Court will hear today i.e. on Monday the allegations of rigging in the Chandigarh Mayor elections. BJP's Chandigarh unit chief Jatinder Pal Malhotra said that Sonkar has submitted his resignation to the Corporation Commissioner.

The BJP had won the mayor's election held on January 30, dealing a blow to the alliance of AAP and Congress and had accused the returning officer of tampering with the ballot papers. Sonkar had defeated Kuldeep Kumar of Aam Aadmi Party in the election for the post of Mayor. Sonkar got 16 votes, while Kumar got 12 votes and eight votes were declared invalid. Kumar later moved the Supreme Court.

Now BJP has total 17 votes

After three councilors of Aam Aadmi Party joined BJP, the entire equation of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has changed. After the change of Aam Aadmi Party councilors in the Municipal Corporation, the total number of BJP has now increased to 17. Whereas he also has 1 Parliament vote.

Apart from this, during the recently held mayor elections, the only councilor of Shiromani Akali Dal had also supported BJP. That means BJP has now got 19 votes yesterday. After the alliance of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, the number of votes of councilors has now reduced to only 17. In which 10 votes of Aam Aadmi Party and 7 votes of Congress are included.

There are a total of 35 councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, while the vote of one MP is 36 and the Mayor is elected using these 36 votes. There was a lot of controversy regarding the recently concluded mayor elections. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have alleged rigging in the elections.

Supreme Court had made sharp remarks in the first hearing

During the first hearing of the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court had made sharp remarks regarding the elections. During the hearing, the Supreme Court had said that we direct that the complete records of the Mayor Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections should be confiscated from the High Court Registrar General and the ballot papers and videography should also be preserved.

The Chief Justice had said during the hearing that this is like killing democracy. This man (Returning Officer) should be prosecuted. This is a joke with democracy. This is the behavior of the returning officer. Also, the Supreme Court issued a notice on the entire matter. The Supreme Court also said that the High Court has failed to conduct the elections properly.

In fact, a video of the counting of votes was presented before the Supreme Court after the elections. In the video, the actions of the returning officer appear full of suspicion. On the basis of the video, the opposition parties have demanded justice in the case from the Supreme Court. The next hearing of this case is to be held today i.e. on Monday.
