Earlier on Monday, the notification of CAA law was issued. With this, the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA have come into force before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in India. On this, Hindu American groups said that CAA was long awaited and it mirrors the Lautenberg Amendment made for refugees in America.

'Big victory for the oppressed minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan'

American Hindu organization i.e. HAF issued a statement saying that sometimes wrong information is given regarding CAA. The CAA does not alter the rights of any Indian citizen nor does it establish checks for general immigration. It also does not stop Muslims from coming to India. Pushpita Prasad of the Coalition of Hindus of North America said this is a major victory for the human rights of persecuted religious minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. He said that CAA will not have any impact on the people living in India.

With the release of CAA notification, non-Muslim refugees who came to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before 2014 will start getting citizenship. Under the new laws of CAA, the Modi government will now start granting Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants - Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians - who came from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014.

Applicants will have to declare the year in which they came to India without travel documents, an official said. No documents will be asked from the applicants. According to the law, undocumented minorities from the three neighboring countries will get benefits under CAA.
