One Nation One Election - How will the government pass ONOE? Getting the votes of 69 MPs is a challenge
One Nation One Election: The Modi government has approved the proposal of the Kovind Committee on One Nation One Election (ONOE). After this decision, the government is now preparing to bring a bill on this subject in Parliament. This bill will face the real test, especially in the Lok Sabha, where the government will need the support of 69 MPs to get it passed.

Recommendations of the Kovind Committee

The Kovind Committee had sought opinions on One Nation One Election from 62 political parties, out of which 47 parties sent their responses. 32 parties supported the recommendations, mostly BJP allies. At the same time, 15 parties opposed, including major parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Aam Aadmi Party. This situation shows that there is a deep gap between political parties on this issue.

Number game in Parliament

After the Lok Sabha elections-2024, 271 MPs have supported the recommendations of the Kovind Committee, out of which 240 MPs are from BJP. The NDA figure in the Lok Sabha is 293. But 362 votes or a two-thirds majority will be required to pass the bill. If all the MPs are present during the voting, the government may face difficulty in garnering support from its allies.

Rajya Sabha situation

The situation is not favorable for the government in the Rajya Sabha as well. Here, the support of 164 MPs will be needed to pass the bill. The NDA has 115 MPs, including 6 nominated MPs. If all the members are present, the majority figure will be 156. It is clear from this that the government may face challenges in the Rajya Sabha as well.

Stand of political parties

27 parties of the NDA are in favor of One Nation One Election, while 10 parties of the India Alliance are opposing it. Many non-NDA parties are also divided on this, some are in support and some are against. Many of these parties have not responded to the recommendations of the Kovind Committee.

Constitutional process

According to Article 368 of the Constitution, the bill must be passed by a special majority in each House. This means that each House has to pass the bill separately. The President also has to give his assent to it, and he cannot send it back.

Conclusion

The proposal of One Nation One Election is an important step, but the government will have to face many political and constitutional hurdles to implement it. This situation shows that there is a deep division in Indian politics on this issue, and overcoming it can be a big challenge for the Modi government. If the government is able to implement its plan successfully, it can bring a big change in the Indian election system.
