IPL 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a major change in the rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. By removing the ban on captains due to slow over rate till now, the BCCI has decided to implement a new demerit point system. This change will apply not only to slow over rate but to the entire Code of Conduct, in which action can be taken against the players as well as the coaching staff.

How will the demerit point system work?

According to a Cricbuzz report, now players and teams will be given demerit points on the lines of international cricket in lieu of violation of the Code of Conduct. These points will remain effective for 36 months (3 years). If more demerit points are added to a player's account, he may have to face the punishment of suspension (ban).

Basis of getting demerit points

BCCI has divided demerit points into four levels:

Level-1 violation:

  • 25% match fee fine
  • 1 demerit point
Level-2 violation:

  • 4 demerit points for 3 violations
Level-3 violation:

  • 5-6 demerit points will be given
Level-4 violation:

  • 7-8 demerit points will be given
How much punishment for how many demerit points?

According to Article 7.6 of BCCI's Code of Conduct:

  • 4-7 demerit points: 1 match ban
  • 8-11 demerit points: 2 match ban
  • 12-15 demerit points: 3 match ban
  • 16 or more demerit points: 5 match ban
What will change with the new rules?

The main objective of this decision of BCCI is to make the players and captains more disciplined. Seeing the growing stature and popularity of IPL, BCCI now wants to ensure international level discipline in the league as well. This will not only improve the quality of the game but will also develop a sense of responsibility among the players and coaching staff.
