Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin appointed Muhammad Yunus to this post after meeting with student leaders and the heads of the three military services, local media reported this news late Tuesday night quoting a statement and officials of the President's Office.

Had once refused to take responsibility

Violence, protests and coups are nothing new in Bangladesh. In this episode, after 17 years, once again in Bangladesh in the month of July this year, students started protesting over reservation which took a violent turn and hundreds of people lost their lives. After this, there has been a big political upheaval in the country, former PM Sheikh Hasina has fled the country. In such a situation, the responsibility of running the interim government has now been handed over to the same Mohammad Yunus, who had rejected the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh 17 years ago.

A similar situation had arisen in January 2007 when the army took over the power of Bangladesh and both former Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia were in jail on corruption charges. At that time also, the army had tried to make Bangladesh's Nobel Prize winner Mohammad Yunus the acting Prime Minister to run the country, but Mohammad Yunus had refused to take such a big responsibility.

Mohammad Yunus, who was said to be the most staunch opponent of Sheikh Hasina, has become a big name in Bangladesh politics today. How Yunus, who took over the reins of the interim government after the violence and protests, became such a big name and what is his enmity with Sheikh Hasina and how and when did it start, these things are also very interesting. Yunus, who was once a close and staunch supporter of Sheikh Hasina's father Mujibur Rahman, was also close to Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina had once praised Yunus a lot and called him the person who would eradicate poverty from the world.

How did a staunch supporter of his father become an enemy of his daughter

Yunus, a strong expert in economics, launched a newspaper to raise awareness about the liberation struggle of Bangladesh while teaching in Tennessee. After that he decided to contest the elections, after which his relations with Sheikh Hasina deteriorated. Yunus's enmity with Sheikh Hasina, who used to praise him, started. The result of this was that more than 100 cases were registered against Yunus and the court sentenced him to 6 months in jail in the corruption case.

Mohammad Yunus, who was a staunch supporter of his father, was made an enemy by his daughter Sheikh Hasina. Yunus believed that Sheikh Hasina is a killer of democracy and has forcibly seized power in Bangladesh by becoming a dictator at the instigation of India. After this thinking of his and the formation of his new party, the enmity between Hasina and Yunus kept increasing and he also started to be disliked in the eyes of the leaders. Sheikh Hasina started feeling a political threat to herself from Yunus.

Hasina had said - Newcomers to politics are often dangerous

Sheikh Hasina, who used to praise Yunus, now started saying without naming Yunus, "Newcomers to politics are often dangerous. They should be viewed with suspicion. They cause more harm than good to the country." Troubled by these words of hers, Yunus announced to leave the party on May 3, just 76 days after the formation of his party, and not only this, he also announced his retirement from politics.

Despite this, Sheikh Hasina's enmity towards him did not decrease and immediately after forming the government in 2008, Hasina sent investigative agencies after Yunus. From then on, Mohammad Yunus' bad days started and many anti-government allegations were leveled against him. In this way, the enmity between Sheikh Hasina and Mohammad Yunus became face to face and in 2011, he was forcibly removed from the Grameen Bank that he had established himself.

Yunus remained hidden with his family in the US Embassy

Sheikh Hasina started calling Yunus a puppet of foreign powers and kept accusing him of many things. The biggest impact of this was that in 2012, the World Bank refused to give donations for building a bridge over the Padma River. This made Hasina feel that this work was done by Yunus and she was so angry that she said that Yunus used his connections to mislead the World Bank. Yunus then started receiving death threats and he remained hidden with his family in the US Embassy in Dhaka.

When the bridge over the Padma River was completed 10 years later in 2022, Sheikh Hasina had said during a program that Yunus should be drowned in the Padma River and when he starts gasping for breath, he should be pulled onto the bridge so that he learns a lesson.
