India - Lemon prices fell so low in wholesale markets, still expensive in retail
After reaching the sky of lemon prices for the last one month, now news of relief is coming. Lemons sold in the retail market up to Rs 400 a kg have become much cheaper in the wholesale markets. However, the price of lemon is still being charged in retail. Talking about today's rate, the price of lemon in Delhi has fallen significantly. Along with this, lemon is also reaching Asia's largest fruit and vegetable market in Azadpur in more quantity than before. Therefore, relief from lemon is expected in the heat of May-June.
Today the wholesale rate of lemon in Azadpur Mandi of Delhi has been in the range of Rs 60 to Rs 100 per kg. This is a huge drop in the prices of lemons. Whereas till last week, lemon was being sold in bulk in the same market for Rs 160 to 180 per kg. This was the reason that the prices of lemons suddenly skyrocketed in the retail market and lemon left behind fruits and dry fruits. Virendra Jain, a wholesaler of lemons in the market, told that today the rate of lemon is very broken. It is expected that the wholesale rate of lemon will reach below Rs 50 per kg for the next few days.
The demand for lemon had increased significantly in the month of Ramadan. Apart from this, due to the damage to the crop due to floods, the arrival of lemon was less. However, due to high demand and price of lemon in April-May, most of the crop from Andhra Pradesh is being sent here. Apart from this, goods from Telangana and Karnataka are also coming to the market. Due to the arrival of goods from three states, the price of lemon has dropped significantly today. Usually lemon starts coming from Karnataka in the end of May or first week of June, but due to the high prices, lemons are being sent from Karnataka to Delhi from the month of April. However, there is a very slight difference between the lemons of Andhra and Karnataka.
However, lemon is still being sold at the rate of Rs 250 per kg in retail mandis in many cities including Delhi-Gurugram. Despite the fall in the prices of lemons in bulk, arguments are being made by the retailers that lemons are expensive. Regarding this, the sellers say that they have stocked lemons, they have been bought at expensive prices, so there is a compulsion to sell them at the same price.
