A sudden fire broke out at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) located on the Amritsar Medical College campus in Punjab on Saturday afternoon. High flames began to rise after a blast in two transformers placed on the rear side of the X-ray unit. Due to the fire, smoke spread all around. 650 patients admitted in the wards of the hospital were taken out and brought on the streets.The fire has been brought under control after two hours. Patients are also being shifted to the wards again. On the other hand, the hospital administration and electricity department gathered in an effort to restart the hospital's electricity. On the orders of CM Bhagwant Mann, Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh also reached the hospital to know the condition of the patients.The incident took place at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital around 2:00 pm. Being Saturday, there were no patients in the OPD, but about 650 patients are admitted in the hospital wards. There are two transformers on the back side of the OPD and near the X-ray unit. They are supplying electricity to the entire hospital. In the afternoon, these transformers suddenly exploded and caught fire. The flames went very high. There is a skin ward just above the transformers. The smoke was so much that the patients of the ward had to be evacuated immediately.Patients were brought to the streets because of the smokeDue to the fire on the transformers, smoke spread throughout the hospital. Patients began to suffocate. After this all the patients were brought out of the hospital on the road. Due to the stampede, many patients were pulled out by breaking windows.The blazing fire was brought under control after two hours.On getting information about the incident, fire brigade vehicles also reached the spot. The fire was brought under control after two hours. Oil in the transformers was making it difficult to control the fire. Union Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO also reached the spot to take stock of the spot. At present, the hospital administration has gathered in an effort to restart the electricity.Fire under control due to fire safety normsThe principal of the medical college said that the fire was being brought under control due to the fire safety system of the hospital. The Fire Safety Inspector immediately threw fire balls towards the transformers. At present, the patients have been evacuated, but as soon as the smoke in the building starts to subside, the patients will be shifted to the ward again.CM expressed concernChief Minister Bhagwant Mann sent Union Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO to the spot after receiving information about the fire. Minister Harbhajan Singh took stock of the rescue operation and gave full detailed information to CM Bhagwant Mann. CM Bhagwant Mann also expressed regret over the incident and thanked God that there was no loss of life in it.
