Central Government: Taking an important step for the workers of the country, the Central Government on Thursday decided to increase the minimum wage rate to Rs 1,035 per day. This amendment has been made under the reform of Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). According to the Ministry of Labor, the main objective of this decision is to provide relief to the workers from the rising cost of living. The new amendment will significantly improve the income of the workers, which will enable them to combat the impact of inflation.

Sector-wise amendment in wage rates

Under this amendment, the minimum wage rate for workers engaged in unskilled work like construction, cleaning, loading and unloading of goods will be Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month). This rate has been fixed for 'A' category areas.

Minimum wage rates for different skill levels

Minimum wage rates have also been fixed based on the skill levels of the workers:

The minimum wage rate for semi-skilled workers will be Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month).

The rate has been fixed at Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month) for skilled workers, clerical work and unarmed guards.

The minimum wage rate for highly skilled and those doing watchman/guard work with weapons has been increased to Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).

These new wage rates will be effective from October 1, 2024. Earlier, the minimum wage rates were last revised in April 2024.

Wages based on skill level and geographical area

The minimum wage rates are divided into four categories based on skill level: unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled. Also, it is classified into A, B, and C categories based on geographical area.

The Ministry of Labor said that the central government has implemented this amendment in VDA to improve the lives of unorganized sector workers and protect them from inflation.
