Onion Price: There is no hope of a decline in onion prices in many parts of the country including the capital Delhi. Onion, which is an important part of the Indian kitchen, is taking a toll on the common man's pocket these days. The rising prices of onion are not only making the purchase of vegetables expensive, but are also affecting the household budget due to its usefulness in various dishes.

Onion prices in Delhi reached Rs 58 per kg

Onion prices in Delhi have once again reached a high level recently. According to government data, the average price of onion in Delhi has reached Rs 58 per kg. Data compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs shows that the average price of onion across the country was Rs 49.98 per kg on Tuesday. However, the prevailing price of onion in the market is around Rs 50 per kg, which is a major concern for consumers.

Big difference between maximum and minimum prices of onion

According to government data, the maximum price of onion has reached Rs 80 per kg, while its minimum price is Rs 27 per kg. Due to this disparity, consumers have to pay different prices for purchasing onions at different places. On September 5, the central government started retail sale of onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai in an effort to control onion prices. This sale is being organized through centers and mobile vans run by NCCF and NAFED.

Storage status and future prospects

Currently, farmers and traders have a stock of about 38 lakh tonnes of onion. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said last week that the forecast for onion availability and prices in the coming months remains positive. The area under onion sowing in the Kharif season reached 2.9 lakh hectares by last month, up from 1.94 lakh hectares in the same period last year. This increase is a positive sign towards improving onion availability.

Way forward

Although there is no immediate hope of relief in onion prices, the situation is likely to improve in the coming months due to increased storage and sowing area. Steps taken by the government to provide relief to consumers, such as selling onions at subsidized rates, may also become a ray of hope. Still, it remains to be seen how much the market situation changes with the implementation of these measures in the future and when the common man will get relief from high onion prices.
