On Thursday, 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailed and some coaches overturned in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, killing 7 people and injuring over 45. At the same time, there were 2 coaches in which the passengers were trapped. According to railway officials, six coaches were badly damaged. A passenger said that we got a sudden jolt. We were all shaking vigorously and the luggage kept on the upper seat fell here and there.A partially damaged coach overturned due to the collision, while some of the coaches came down from the slopes and overturned. During the accident, some coaches got detached from the train, while the wheels of some got derailed. Indian Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of each of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh for critically injured and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries.
What the passengers said
The people on the train told in a conversation with ABP News that how suddenly this accident happened. Mehtab, who was traveling in the train, told that, we were in the rear compartment when the train accident happened and many of the front coaches derailed. We survived this accident. I was traveling with 11 of my companions. We got scared after the accident happened.
Deepak, another eyewitness on the train, told that he was traveling in S-1 bogie. When suddenly there was a strong jolt, we came to know that an accident had happened. When I came out and saw, all the front compartments had fallen down.
Overnight rescue operation
The rescue operation continued throughout the night to save the people fighting for life in Jalpaiguri. Along with NDRF, BSF has also been deployed in this work. The injured were taken out of the compartment and transported by stretcher to ambulance and then to Jalpaiguri Hospital. This work of saving lives is going on since the incident.
TMC raised questions
Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised questions on this accident. TMC MP Saugata Roy said that it is being feared that there was a crack in the track, it should be investigated. The Railway Minister should give a clear statement on the incident.
