Russian Embassy: Australia's House of Representatives passed a law on Thursday to prevent Russia from building a new embassy near Parliament House due to security reasons. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the law would end Russia's lease on the site based on advice from security agencies. Albanese told reporters, “There has been very clear security advice regarding the presence of Russia so close to the Parliament House. We took prompt action to ensure that the (leased) venue does not become a reason for formal diplomatic presence.'We condemn the Russian attack on Ukraine'Albanese said that the Australian government condemns Russia's 'illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine'. He said the opposition and other MPs not supporting the government were briefed about the law on Wednesday night and it was agreed to pass it through both houses on Thursday. The government has a majority in the House of Representatives, but not in the Senate.Albanese said, 'It is clear that today's decision was taken in the interest of Australia's national security and I thank the coalition (opposition) and independent candidates for the House of Representatives and Senate for their cooperation in this matter.'Albanese did not give a clear answer to the question of security concerns regarding the Chinese embassy. The Chinese Embassy is located across the street from the Russian Embassy building. The Russian Embassy did not respondThe Russian Embassy did not immediately respond to the action taken by Australia. The Australian government has taken this step after the federal court last month banned Russia from removing it from the construction site. The diplomatic complex at Yarralumla was canceled by local Canberra authorities due to slow building work since it was leased in 2008. Under the terms of the lease, Russia had agreed to complete construction within three years. The construction work of the embassy is partially completed.Albanese said that the Russian embassy would remain in Griffith and the Australian embassy would remain in Moscow. Opposition defense spokesman Andrew Hastie said his party stood with the government on national security. Home Minister Claire O'Neill said that no embassy would be allowed to be built at that location.
