Cricket Desk: India and Australia are set to lock horns in the opener on Friday, July 29 as women’s cricket is set to make its debut in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The cricket matches will take place over nine days with the final scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 7. The last time cricket took place in the CWG was back during the 1998 edition in Kuala Lumpur.This time, the tournament will take place in the T20 format. In the opening day, Pakistan and Barbados will also cross swords. Australia, India, Barbados and Pakistan form a part of Group A. New Zealand, South Africa, England and a qualifier form Group B.Seven out of the eight qualifying teams were already named back in April. The final team of the tournament will be announced by the end of January. The announcement of the schedule comes just a few weeks before tickets go out for sale.“The women’s cricket T20 competition will be held at the Edgbaston Stadium from the 29 July, with the bronze and gold medal matches taking place on 7 August,” the ECB said in a statement. Geoff Allardice, the ICC Acting Chief Executive, said that women’s cricket will take a step further after the Commonwealth Games. The matches will take place at the iconic Edgbaston in Birmingham.“We have seen tremendous growth of the women’s game over the past few years and the Commonwealth Games will undoubtedly be another major moment on that journey.
