Jaipur, also known as Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan. As Amer, it has also been the capital of the famous ancient kingdom known as Jaipur. The city was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amer. Jaipur is famous for its rich building-tradition, Saras-culture and historical significance.The city is surrounded by the Aravalli ranges on three sides. The city of Jaipur is identified by the pink dholpuri stones in its palaces and old houses, which is a specialty of its architecture. In 1876, the then Maharaja Sawai Ramsingh decorated the entire city in pink with the reception of Queen Elizabeth [Prince of Wales Crown Prince Albert] of England. The city has been named Pink City since then. According to the 2011 census Jaipur is the tenth most populous city in India. The city was named Jaipur after the name of Raja Jai Singh II. The distance from the capital Delhi to Jaipur is 280 kilometers.The city of Jaipur is surrounded by walls and enclosures with seven doors for entry. Later another gate was also built which was called 'New Gate'. When the Mughals lost their strength in the seventeenth century, anarchy began to rise throughout India, during which time the Amber princely state of Rajputana emerged as a major force. It is evident that Amara began to look small when Maharaja Sawai Jaisingh took his princely state in the realm of miles and for smooth governance and thus Jaipur was conceived as this new capital. There are differences of opinion about where the foundation of the city was first laid, but according to some historians, the construction of the city started with the hunting hunt located near Talkatora. Some believe it to be a place of 'Yagyayupa', a place near Brahmapuri and some Amer. But it is undisputed, first became Chandramahal and then the market and three Chaupadas together.
