Twitter says it has been and remains deeply committed to India making every effort to comply with new guidelines

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing standoff between Twitter and the central government for the past few months, the social media platform said it would make every effort to comply with the new IT laws. In a statement issued on Wednesday, a Twitter spokesperson said – Twitter has remained fully committed to India and serving the important public conversations that take place on the service.

The social media platform further said- We have assured the Government of India that Twitter is doing everything possible to comply with the new guidelines. It further said that- "An overview on our progress has been shared with the Government of India. We will continue to have positive interactions with the Government of India."

Earlier, online social networking site Twitter had sought more time from the government to comply with the new information technology (IT) rules. Significantly, the government has announced new IT rules for social media companies. Under this new rule, large social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will need to take additional measures. This includes appointment of Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Officer and Grievance Officer in India etc.

Major social media platforms were given three months to comply with the new rules. In this category those social media platforms are kept, whose number of registered users is more than 50 lakhs.

In a notice sent to Twitter, the ministry also said that although these rules are effective from May 26, 2021, Twitter Inc is given an opportunity to comply with the rules through a final notice in good faith. He has to comply with the rules immediately. If she fails to do so, the exemption from liability which she has got as a medium will be withdrawn. Also, he has to be ready for action under the IT Act and other penal provisions.
