Israel-Hezbollah War: After the killing of former Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah in Israeli attacks on the southern suburbs of Beirut in September, the organization has appointed Naeem Qassim as the new Secretary General. Hezbollah's decision-making body 'Shura Council' unanimously elected Qassim to the post of Secretary General. After assuming his responsibility in this post, Qassim gave his first address from Beirut and the next two speeches were from Iran's capital Tehran. According to reports, he has been called to Tehran by the highest authorities of Iran due to the fear of assassination.

Who is Naeem Qassim?

Naeem Qassim has been playing the role of Deputy Chief in Hezbollah since 1991. He was appointed to this post during the tenure of former Hezbollah Secretary General Abbas al-Musawi. Abbas al-Musawi was killed in an Israeli attack in 1992, after which Hassan Nasrallah continued to lead Hezbollah. Qassem has also been associated with Lebanon's Shia Amal movement, from where he began his political journey, but he left it in 1979. Qassem took part in important meetings during the founding of Hezbollah, which was formed in 1982 under the supervision of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Naim Qassem has also been Hezbollah's chief spokesperson and has clarified the organization's position to foreign media. He has been the main coordinator of the organization's election campaigns since Hezbollah contested parliamentary elections for the first time in 1992. Born in 1953 in the village of Fila in southern Lebanon, Qassem is the father of six sons and has written 26 books so far in his life. In recent years he represented Hezbollah at various official events in Iran, including leading Hezbollah at the swearing-in ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Naeem Qasim on Israeli target

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has made a strong comment about Naeem Qasim. He said that Qasim has repeated the mistake of previous Hezbollah leaders. While meeting injured soldiers in Haifa, Herzog said that "Now Qasim's turn will also come. Not only is he on the wrong path, but I believe that his day will also come."

This rhetoric between Israel and Hezbollah is increasing tension for Lebanon and the entire region.
