Delhi: The Center is likely to announce the Agneepath Recruitment Scheme for Defense Forces on Tuesday. Under this, the soldiers will be recruited for a tenure of four years only. As per the plan, the chiefs of the three services will address a press conference to announce the details of the plan.
The chiefs of the three services had briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi two weeks ago about the Agneepath scheme for recruiting soldiers, which would pave the way for inducting soldiers into the security forces for a short term. The scheme is being implemented by the Department of Military Affairs.Benefit will be available even after being relieved of duty from the armyUnder the new Agneepath scheme, the youth will join the army for a period of four years and serve the nation. The scheme is a part of the government's efforts towards reducing the expenditure and age profile of the defense forces. The places for recruitment can also be significantly expanded. At the end of four years, about 80 per cent of the soldiers will be relieved of duty and will receive assistance from the armed forces for further employment opportunities. Many corporations will also be interested in reserving jobs for trained and disciplined youth who have served their country. It has been estimated by the Armed Forces that thousands of crores in salary, allowances and pension can be saved if a large number of soldiers are recruited under this tour of duty concept. Apart from this the best of the recruited youth can also get an opportunity to continue their service in case vacancies become available. The DMA studied similar recruitment models in eight countries before developing the Indian model. It is worth noting that the then CDS late General Bipin Rawat was working on a tour of duty plan for the army officers, under which the officers in the army were to serve for only three years. However, the plan came to a halt after his death. But now it is preparing a plan to bring 'Agniveer' scheme on the same lines for the posts of soldiers as well as officers.
