Chennai: The England cricket team has been successful in getting the better of Indian bowlers in the ongoing first match of the four-match Test series at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai thus far. On the back of a scintillating double-century by captain Joe Root, England is reeling at a massive total of 555 for 8 at the end of Day 2.

While England was already successful in wearing down the Indian bowlers, poor fielding by the players added to the misery of the host team. The players looked sloppy on the field and failed to cash on the mistakes made by the batsman. In the 175th over, Dominic Bess, who was playing at 19 runs, had almost gifted his wicket to the opposition off the delivery by Washington Sundar but Rohit Sharma let go of the chance and gave a lifeline to the opposition batsman.

On the first delivery, Bess advanced and pushed the ball but it edged the inner edge and flew slow and straight to the mid-wicket. Rohit, who was fielding at mid-wicket, tried to take the catch with his fingers pointing up but couldn’t complete it. During the whole episode, the thing that caught the attention of many users was the reaction of England’s all-rounder Ben Stokes. He went ‘whoa what’ and tried to cover his face with the hand in disbelief.

England takes an edge over India after Day 2

The toss had gone in the favour of England skipper Joe Root and he elected to bat first. This proved to be a masterstroke for the visiting nation as they made the most out of the batting-friendly pitch of Chennai and racked a massive total of 555 for 8 at the end of Day 2 with Dom Bess and Jack Leach batting at 28 and 6 runs respectively.

Root carried his brilliant form with the willow from the Sri Lanka Test series against India too as he slammed a stunning knock of 218 runs off 377 runs. Ben Stokes also made a notable contribution as he added 82 runs to the scoreboard. For India, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Shahbaz Nadeem have taken two wickets each.
