Delhi / Bill to divide J&K into 2 Union Territories passed in Lok Sabha

The J&K Reorganisation Bill, 2019 aimed at bifurcating Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories has been passed by the Lok Sabha. As many as 370 members favoured the Bill, while 70 opposed it. The bill proposes Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory with a legislature, while Ladakh as a Union Territory without a legislature.

The Lok Sabha is debating Narendra Modi government's decision to revoke the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, after a Rajya Sabha discussion Monday.

The Rajya Sabha approved a resolution scrapping provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), and passed another Bill approving the bifurcation of the state into two Union territories, amid protests by the Opposition.

Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were among the ministers who defended the government in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party MP Shashi Tharoor spoke against the government's decision.
