US-China Tariff War: The ongoing trade war between the US and China has now entered a new phase. While earlier this conflict was limited to tariffs and duties, now China has intensified this fight on the diplomatic front as well. Beijing is not only responding to the US tariffs in the same way, but is now trying to create an atmosphere against Washington on the global stage as well.Recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping met Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and appealed for support for multilateral cooperation and free trade. In this conversation, Xi gave a clear indication that China now wants to move towards a fair global governance system along with Western countries, which is not based only on unilateral policies.Attempts to get support from India and Asian countries as wellThis strategy of China is not limited to Europe only. Some time ago, China had also appealed to other Asian countries including India to unite against America. In response to the tariffs being continuously increased by US President Donald Trump, China is now reactivating its old allies and adopting a strategy to bring them together to restore trade balance.Attempt to woo the European UnionThis visit of the Spanish Prime Minister to China is taking place at a time when trade relations between the US and the European Union are also under stress. The new tariffs recently announced by the Trump administration and then their suspension have indicated that the European Union may take steps towards increasing trade with China. Europe is the third largest consumer market in the world after the US and China, and in such a situation it can become an important strategic partner for China.Message of unity and cooperationIn his statement, without naming the US or Trump, Xi Jinping emphasized that the world today is facing many challenges and risks, which can be resolved only through global unity and cooperation. He once again advocated a fair and balanced global system.Spain's interest and European balanceSpanish Prime Minister Sanchez, who is on his third visit to China in two years, said after the talks that Spain is in favour of a balanced relationship between China and the EU. He called for giving priority to dialogue and cooperation, which coincides with China's stance.
