Income Tax Return: Taxpayers may have been disappointed with the announcements made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding tax in the Union Budget for the year 2024, but they did not hesitate in filing income tax returns. More than 7.28 crore people created a new record by filing income tax returns (ITR) till July 31 for the financial year 2023-24. The Income Tax Department itself shared this information on August 2.Let us tell you that the last date for filing income tax returns was July 31. In such a situation, a large number of common people filed their income tax returns honestly. However, many taxpayers and advisors were demanding the department to extend the deadline for filing ITR. Their argument was that there are many technical flaws in the income tax filing website, due to which there is difficulty in filing returns, although the department has not extended the last date this year as well like last year.More returns filed than last yearAccording to the update released by the Income Tax Department, the income tax returns filed for the financial year 2023-24 are more than the 6.77 crores filed last year. This time 7.28 crore ITRs have been filed. Interestingly, this time most of the taxpayers have opted for the new tax system. According to the data, 5.27 crore ITRs have been filed under the new tax regime, while 2.01 crore ITRs were filed under the old tax system. At the same time, 58.57 lakh ITRs of first-time return filers were also received.More than 50 lakh ITRs submitted in a dayThe Income Tax Department informed through its official handle on the social media platform 'X' that out of the total ITRs filed, more than 50 lakh ITRs have been filed till 7 pm on July 31. The department has expressed its gratitude to the public for filing returns on such a large scale. Also, the Income Tax Department is running a helpdesk 24×7 for filing ITR, tax payment and other related services. Apart from this, they are also trying to help taxpayers through calls, live chat, Webex sessions and e-mail.
