Cricket Sri Lanka Ban: At a time when all the cricket fans are engrossed in the discussion of West Indies against Australia and England's memorable victory against Team India, at the same time a big news has come from international cricket, which has a big impact on the upcoming T20 Cricket World Cup. There will be an impact. ICC has lifted the ban on 2014 T20 World Champion Sri Lanka. ICC had banned Sri Lankan cricket after the ODI World Cup last year, after which it was also deprived of hosting the Under-19 World Cup.

The performance of the Sri Lankan team in the World Cup 2023 played in India in October-November was very poor, after which the Sports Minister of the Sri Lankan government suspended the board itself. Since then there was a lot of turmoil in Sri Lankan cricket and in such a situation the ICC had banned the cricket board. Now after about 3 months, ICC has lifted this ban from the Sri Lankan board.

Ban in November, relief in January

The Sri Lankan team was eliminated from the league round of the World Cup and stood at ninth position. Due to this the team also failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy to be held in 2025. In such a situation, the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka dismissed the entire board and appointed an interim president. However, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka overturned this decision after just a day. In such a situation, on November 10, the ICC temporarily suspended the Sri Lankan board.

The ICC had found Sri Lanka Cricket guilty of violating the rules, being a full member, in which outside interference in the functioning of the board is strictly prohibited. In such a situation, the interference of the Sri Lankan government was considered a violation of this rule and the ICC had decided to suspend it. Along with this, it was also deprived of hosting the Under-19 World Cup, which is now being held in South Africa. On Sunday 28 January, the ICC issued a statement saying that Sri Lankan cricket is not currently committing any kind of violation and hence its ban is being lifted.

T20 World Cup could have been missed

However, within a few days, ICC gave a big relief to Sri Lanka and allowed it to continue international cricket and in such a situation, the Sri Lankan team hosted Zimbabwe for the ODI and T20 series. But it also warned that if If government interference does not end, it may be banned for a long time. Due to this, the Sri Lankan team is not able to play cricket at any level and hence it is not able to participate in the T20 World Cup to be held in June. Now after the ban is lifted, the Sri Lankan team will be able to participate in the World Cup without any problem.
