Pahalgam Terrorist Attack: Recent events between India and Pakistan have not only damaged the relations between the two countries, but have also created turmoil in global politics. After the terrorist incident in Pahalgam, India has taken several diplomatic steps with Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and increased pressure by the armies of both countries on the border. At the same time, Pakistan has decided to close the airspace for Indian aircraft. These incidents have increased the threat of war and created a new bitterness in the relations between the two countries. However, changes are also taking place in the global power structure, especially in the attitude of the US and China. US President Donald Trump has said that the US has close relations with both India and Pakistan, and in this situation the role of the US can be very important. Now the question arises that if a situation of war arises, what will be the stance of the US and China?Trade interests of America and ChinaIndia has an important role in the global economy, and its trade is extremely important for both major global powers – the US and China. The trade of these two countries with India is more than $100 billion, which shows that both countries consider India very important for their trade interests. Both the US and China need India's huge market, and hence it would not be wise from an economic point of view for both the countries to support Pakistan against India during an Indo-Pak war.China's Trade OutlookThe bilateral trade between India and China has seen a rise over the years, and the trade is projected to reach US$127.7 billion in 2024-25. Although the trade deficit is more in China's favour, it may be risky for China to jeopardise its relations with India given this trade relationship.Currently, China has economic pressure due to the heavy tariffs imposed by the US. Hence, China has been forced to agree to India's conditions to increase its presence in India. If there is a war between India and Pakistan, China will not openly side with Pakistan, as India has a huge trade importance for China.US-India Trade RelationsThe trade between India and the US is projected to reach $131.84 billion by 2025. This figure shows that the US is India's largest trading partner, and this relationship is very important for both countries from an economic point of view. India and US trade has increased over the years, and India's exports to the US are projected to reach US$86.51 billion in 2024-25.In this situation, it will not be beneficial for the US to support Pakistan against India from any point of view. Instead, the US will try its best to maintain its relations with India considering its trade interests.Pakistan and China-US Trade RelationsThe trade between Pakistan and China is much less than that with India. In 2024, bilateral trade between Pakistan and China was US$23.1 billion, with China's exports to Pakistan being US$20.2 billion. Pakistan's trade with China is growing, but its size is much smaller than that with India. On the other hand, trade between Pakistan and the US was only US$7.3 billion in 2024, with US exports to Pakistan being higher.
