Russia-Ukraine War: The ongoing talks between US and Russian officials in Riyadh on ending the Ukraine war and the Black Sea dispute ended on Monday. The meeting lasted for more than 12 hours, in which both sides held important discussions on ceasefire efforts. According to Russian media, a joint statement on the results of the talks will be issued on Tuesday.

Russian Foreign Ministry statement after the talks

After the conclusion of the meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry released a brief video showing the Russian negotiating team leaving the negotiating room. The ministry did not provide any additional information, only saying that "the Russian-American meeting has ended."

Talks ended without any high-profile document or agreement

Member of the Russian delegation and senior diplomat Grigory Karasin described the talks as 'constructive' and 'technical'. Karasin said, "Not every meeting results in a high-profile document or agreement. The most important thing is to maintain dialogue and better understand each other's position. In this context, we are succeeding."

What issues were discussed in the talks?

The talks between Russian and US officials mainly focused on maritime security and the possibilities of reviving the Black Sea initiative. The initiative is popularly called the "Grain Deal", which was originally implemented under the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey.

However, Russia withdrew from the deal in July 2023. The Kremlin accused Western countries of failing to fulfill their commitments under the deal. In this context, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said before the talks, "If we recall the original deal, significant obligations were fulfilled from our side, but they were never accepted. This issue is included in the agenda of the talks."

Ceasefire efforts and US role

During the meeting, US officials discussed possible agreements regarding a ceasefire in Ukraine. According to some media reports, former US President Donald Trump has proposed to reconsider the deal under the ceasefire agreement. However, no official announcement has been made on this.

This dialogue held in Riyadh is being considered a positive step towards reducing tensions between Russia and America. However, it is not yet clear whether these discussions will yield any concrete results or not. The situation may become more clear through a joint statement in the coming days.
