META News: Nowadays everyone uses WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, but very few people are aware that through these platforms, personal data of people is collected at one place, for which the Nigerian government had made a law, for violating which the government has imposed a fine of crores of rupees on the social media company Meta.

All the platforms of the social media company Meta are most liked across the country, but recently the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) was accused of violating data protection and consumer rights through Meta's platform. FCCPC Chief Executive Officer Adamu Abdullahi said that the investigation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission between May 2021 and December 2023.

Meta fined Rs 22 crore

After this 38-month investigation, Meta was fined Rs 22 crore, with the FCCPC chief stressing that Meta should follow the law and stop exploiting Nigerian consumers and abusing their market. Although there has been no response from Meta in this matter yet, but the FCCPC said that the company was aware of the investigation to be held between May 2021 and December 2023.

Violation happened during ad-free subscription

The European Union (EU) accused Meta in early July of violating the block's digital rules, saying that Meta is offering millions of users to pay money on Facebook and Instagram's new model in ad-free subscription or in addition agree to share their data to run these platforms for free.

People are hyper-connected to social media

Data shared by the National Communications Commission some time ago showed that people under the age of 24 in Africa's most populous country are hyper-connected to social media. A report released said that as of March, the country had about 164.3 million internet subscriptions, out of which more than 51 million people in Nigeria use WhatsApp.
