The Egyptian military said in a statement that at least 11 soldiers were killed and five were wounded in a terrorist attack in the troubled northern region of the Sinai Peninsula.

Egyptian military spokesman Gharib Abdel-Hafiz said in a statement that the clashes broke out after militants attacked a water pumping station east of the Suez Canal on Saturday. Egyptian troops thwarted an attack by a group of terrorists on a water pumping station.

According to the spokesman, 10 soldiers and one officer were among the 11 killed in the clashes, while the armed forces are currently chasing the militants surrounded in a deserted area. However, the exact location has not been mentioned in the statement. The state-run al-Ahram news website reported that the encounter between soldiers and militants took place at the post of the "East Canal Water Lifting Station".

Egypt has been combating terrorism in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula over the past decade and the country has managed to greatly limit terrorist activities in the peninsula. The Sinai terrorists are mostly affiliated with the Islamic State group. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. It is said to be one of the deadliest attacks against Egyptian security forces in recent years.
