Russia-Ukraine War: Eighty countries of the world jointly called at the Swiss conference that Ukraine's "territorial integrity" be made the basis for any peace agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war, although some major developing countries have not attended the conference. The two-day conference has been organized at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland. However, Russia was not present in it. Russia was not even invited to the conference, but many attendees hoped that they could be included on the roadmap to peace. On Sunday, countries resumed talks on how to resolve issues of nuclear security, prisoner exchanges and food exports from Ukraine caused by Russia's two-year war.

Leaders from several Western countries and other countries including Ecuador, Somalia and Kenya met at the Swiss resort Bürgenstock to put forward their vision of what peace could one day look like in Ukraine.

Many hope that Russia will one day join in, but they say it needs to agree to respect Ukraine's territory, about a quarter of which it occupies.

Peace proposal put forward at two-day conference

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said that if we return to a global order where the principle of organization is 'power is right', then the freedom we enjoy today as independent nations will be in serious danger. This is an existential issue.

Analysts say the two-day conference will hardly have any concrete effect towards ending the war, because the country that led it and continues it, Russia, has not yet been invited. Its major ally, China, did not attend. Brazil, which was present at the meeting as an "observer", has tried to jointly seek alternative paths towards peace.

On the occasion, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said those were “minimum conditions” for talks with Russia, a sign of how many other areas of disagreement between Kiev and Moscow will be hard to overcome.

Concern expressed over deportation of children

Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani described a day earlier how his wealthy Gulf country had negotiated with Ukrainian and Russian delegations to reunite Ukrainian children with their families, resulting in 34 children being reunited so far.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said it “requires work” and countries to step up to support efforts by countries like Qatar. He said it is going to take attention from the international community, not just from the United States or Europe, but also from unusual voices that will say what Russia has done here is more than reprehensible and should be rolled back.

The Ukrainian government believes 19,546 children have been deported or forcibly displaced and Russian children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova has previously confirmed that at least 2,000 children were taken from Ukrainian orphanages.
