Starlink Internet: Elon Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink, is poised to launch in India soon. The telecom regulator (TRAI) has accelerated the spectrum allocation process for satellite communication, with plans to finalize it by December 15. Starlink’s potential entry has intensified competition, causing concern for Indian telecom giants like Jio and Airtel. Starlink applied to launch its services in India in October 2022.Apart from Starlink, Jio, Airtel, Amazon Kuiper, and Vi are also in the race to offer satellite internet. However, Starlink’s unique features set it apart from its competitors.
Why is Starlink Unique?
Instead of traditional geostationary satellites, Starlink has established a network of small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) at an altitude of just 550 kilometers, compared to 35,786 kilometers for geostationary satellites.- Low Latency Advantage: The LEO positioning ensures minimal latency, making it ideal for video calls, gaming, and high-speed streaming.
- 42,000 Satellites Network: Musk’s company has deployed around 42,000 small satellites, ensuring stable and fast internet connectivity.
Starlink's Technology
Using Starlink requires a specialized dish antenna that directly captures signals from the satellites, providing users with internet speeds of up to 150 Mbps.- Internet and Calling Without a SIM: Starlink allows users to experience internet and calling services without relying on mobile networks or SIM cards.
- Seamless Connectivity: The LEO satellite network ensures uninterrupted connectivity.
