August 7, 2021 - the date will be inscribed in gold letters in the history of Indian athletics. The credit goes to javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a powerful throw of 87.58m, passing his opponent alone.
Chopra is now the second Indian athlete after marksman Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. His feat certainly ended the wait for 121 Indians to win an Olympic medal in athletics.
Every Indian who watches Neeraj aim for gold is doomed to explode with joy. People praised on social media when the 23-year-old from Haryana did something unexpected in Tokyo. Meanwhile, Anand Mahindra, president of Mahindra and Mahindra Group, has announced that he will be giving Neeraj an XUV 700 for his remarkable achievement.
A Twitter user asked Anand Mahindra “Xuv700 for him (Neeraj Chopra).” In reply, the Mahindra group chairman agreed to it and stated that it would be a personal gift from him to India’s ‘Golden Athlete’. Not just this, but he even tagged two of his company officials to keep the car ready for the gold medallist.
“Yes indeed. It will be my personal privilege & honour to gift our Golden Athlete an XUV 7OO. @rajesh664 @vijaynakra. Keep one ready for him please,” Anand Mahindra tweeted.
Like in qualifying three days ago, Chopra started with an 87.03m javelin throw, then advanced to 87.58m, the best of the day that no one on the field could match.
His third throw-in was 76.76m behind, then he missed the next two attempts before the final effort was 84.24m.
