Like Punjab, bet in Gujarat too

To recall, before the assembly elections in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party had conducted a survey in which Bhagwant Mann was clearly the popular choice. After which after the victory in the elections, the Aam Aadmi Party made Bhagwant Mann the Chief Minister of the state. Addressing the media here, Kejriwal took a jibe at the BJP, saying the party has no agenda as to what it will do in the next five years and people are troubled by the issue of inflation.

Targeting BJP

The AAP convener also questioned why Vijay Rupani was removed from the post of chief minister and whether BJP sought the opinion of the people of the state when Bhupendra Patel was brought in his place. AAP made its debut in Gujarat in the 2017 assembly elections, but could not open an account. After a massive victory in Punjab, the party is trying to spread its feet in other parts of the country as well.

AAP's hopes in Gujarat have been boosted by its performance in the February 2021 Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections, in which the BJP won 93 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party bagged 27 seats. In September, AAP had appointed Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha as co-in-charge (sah-in-charge) for the elections. Chadha had earlier played a key role in helping AAP register its victories in Punjab and Delhi.

The term of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly ends on February 18, 2023. The 182-seat Gujarat Assembly currently has 111 BJP and 62 Congress MLAs. Last month, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey visited Gujarat and Himachal to review the election preparations. The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority in the last election with an increase in vote share. Despite the reduction in the number of seats, the BJP retained its simple majority in the house and formed the government for the sixth time. In the results declared for all the 182-seat Gujarat Legislative Assembly, BJP won 99 seats, Congress won 77 seats, NCP won 1 seat, while Bharatiya Tribal Party and Independent candidate won 2 and 3 seats respectively. Elections are to be held in Gujarat by the end of this year.
