China HMPV Virus: After China, now cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have started coming up in India as well. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of this virus through routine surveillance in Karnataka. The central and state governments have become alert about this new virus and guidelines are being issued to health officials.First two cases: Infection in children in KarnatakaIn the first two cases of HMPV so far, the infection was found in two young children in Karnataka.First case: A three-month-old newborn, who had a history of bronchoconstrictor pneumonia, was admitted to Baptist Hospital. She has been discharged after treatment.Second case: An eight-year-old child, who also had a history of bronchoconstrictor pneumonia, was found infected in the same hospital on January 3. The child is now recovering.Who is at greater risk?According to information shared by the Andhra Pradesh government, the HMPV virus spreads from person to person just like COVID-19. The virus can be particularly dangerous for the following groups:Young childrenThe elderlyPeople with weakened immune systemsHowever, no case of the virus has been reported in Andhra Pradesh so far.Modes of spread of the infectionThe HMPV virus spreads primarily through close contact with an infected person. It can spread through activities such as coughing, sneezing, touching and shaking hands.According to Andhra Pradesh Director of Public Health and Family Welfare Dr K Padmavati, maintaining hygiene and keeping a distance from infected persons is important to avoid the virus.Government preparednessHealth officials in Delhi and other states have issued guidelines to ensure necessary preparedness to deal with this virus and other respiratory infections.Tips for the publicFollow health safety measures: Wear a mask, maintain social distancing and wash hands regularly.Pay attention to symptoms: If anyone shows symptoms such as fever, cough, difficulty in breathing or fatigue, contact a doctor immediately.Prevent infection: Exercise caution when in contact with immunocompromised individuals and children.ConclusionHMPV can become a new health challenge for India, especially for children and vulnerable individuals.
