India's space agency ISRO had created a new history by landing Chandrayaan-3 on the South Pole of the Moon in August last year. This was an area where no country in the world had reached till now. How difficult this mission was can be gauged from the fact that Russia's Luna-25, which was launched before India, and now America's Peregrine mission have failed even before reaching the moon. The special thing is that America and Russia, which failed to make a soft landing on the moon, are the countries that have reached the moon the most number of times. Especially America had landed humans on the moon six consecutive times from 1969 to 1972. At that time, the computing technology of those missions was much less than today's mobile phones.

The biggest challenge of the Moon mission?

The biggest challenge of the Moon mission is soft landing there, after India's Chandrayaan-3, America, China, Japan, Russia, Japan and Israel are desperate to reach the Moon. Many missions including UAE and Saudi Arabia are in the queue. The biggest mission among these is of America, which has been named Artemis, under this mission America wants to establish a lab on the moon, which is a manned mission. The mission Peregrine related to this was launched by NASA, which has lost hope of soft landing on the Moon. In this, NASA had sent a lander which was to land on the moon, but due to a fault in the propulsion module, it got damaged. Due to this, America's mission was delayed by another year.

These moon missions have failed

• America's Peregrine-1 mission, which was launched this year, was supposed to land on the moon in February, but due to a malfunction it will not be able to do so.
• Russia had launched the Luna-25 mission before India's Chandrayaan-3 in 2023, although it crashed some distance from soft landing.
• In 2019, Israel launched its Moon mission Beresheet, which was a landing mission, but it failed.
• In the same year, India's Chandrayaan-2 attempted to reach the Moon and land Vikram Lander on the South Pole, but failed.
• In April 2023, Japan's Hakuto-R also could not land on the moon because its fuel had run out.

It is necessary to conquer the South Pole

India is the fourth country to reach the Moon after America, Russia and China, however India's success is more special because it is the first country to land on the South Pole of the Moon. Till now, all the missions of America and Russia that have reached the Moon have landed in easy areas. Peregrine was also going to land in an easier area. According to a PTI report, there is a large amount of ice and water in the South Pole. In such a situation, it is necessary for any human mission to reach this area. Russia's Luna-25 was to reach here before Chandrayaan-3, but it was damaged before soft landing. This mission was to land on the Boguslavsky crater of the moon. This is an area spread over an area of 4 square kilometres, there are slopes and potholes here. Russia had studied this area, yet could not make a soft landing here.
