AMERICA / Indian-origin Arun Venkataraman took oath as assistant commerce minister of world markets

Indian-origin Arun Venkataraman was sworn in as assistant commerce minister for global markets and director general of the US and Foreign Commercial Service for the International Trade Administration. He will now lead a team of over 1,400 employees based in the US and abroad.

Indian-origin Arun Venkataraman was sworn in as assistant commerce minister for global markets and director general of the US and Foreign Commercial Service for the International Trade Administration. He will now lead a team of over 1,400 employees based in the US and abroad.

Venkataraman was nominated by President Joe Biden and was approved by the US Senate on April 7. He will lead the federal government's efforts to boost exports and attract investment.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said Arun's expertise in trade law and commercial policy will prove invaluable as the Department of Commerce helps US business and employees recover from the economic hardships affected by the pandemic. Under Arun's experience and leadership, the American public and private sector will get a direction. He has over 20 years of experience in world trade, working for global organizations and as an advisor to the US government.
