India Coal Record: India has crossed the one billion tonne (1 billion tonnes) coal production mark in the current financial year 2024-25, achieving a historic feat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a moment of pride for the country and said that this achievement reflects India's commitment to energy security and self-reliance.

Historic record of coal production

India's coal production crossed one billion tonnes on March 20, 2025, an achievement 11 days ahead of the coal production of 997.83 million tonnes in the previous financial year 2023-24. This record performance is the result of the collective efforts of public and private companies in the coal sector, more than 350 coal mines and about 5 lakh mine workers.

About 55% of India's energy needs are dependent on coal, and 74% of the country's electricity is generated by coal-based power plants. With this achievement, India's coal imports have also come down. Coal imports declined by 8.4% from April to December 2024, saving foreign exchange worth $5.43 billion (Rs 42,315.7 crore).

Prime Minister Modi congratulates

Posting on social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "One billion tonnes of coal production in the current financial year is a proud moment for India. Crossing this historic figure reflects our commitment towards energy security, economic growth and self-reliance. This achievement is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of all those associated with this sector."

Along with this appreciation of the Prime Minister, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy also announced this achievement and said that this milestone will meet India's growing power demand, accelerate economic growth and ensure a bright future for every citizen.

Future plans

The Government of India is continuously making efforts to increase coal production and ensure self-reliance. As per the action plan of the Ministry of Coal for FY 2024-25, the total production/offtake target for this year has been set at 108 crore tonnes.

With this historic achievement, India has further strengthened its energy security and taken a significant step towards reducing import dependence. This reflects India's potential in the coal production sector and strengthens the possibility of taking the country's energy self-sufficiency to new heights in the coming years.
