Munawar Faruqui News: Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui is as popular for his jokes as he is in the news for controversies. He has even been to jail due to his controversial jokes and has also won the reality TV show Bigg Boss. Now once again he is surrounded by controversies over his comment on the Konkani community. After this, he was even threatened with being trampled. However, he has apologized. Let us take this opportunity to know what is the Konkani community on which Munawar Faruqui commented.

Konkan is spread from Maharashtra to Goa

The Konkani community on which Munawar Faruqui has commented is the native of the coastal districts of Maharashtra and Goa. Konkan is actually a 720 km long coastal area, which is spread across different districts of Maharashtra and Goa. The native language of the people residing here is Konkani. However, Konkani people use different dialects of this language, just like there are many dialects of Hindi like Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Kashika etc. This Konkani language is also the official language of Goa. It is believed that Konkani language has evolved from Prakrit and Apabhramsha and it is the remaining form of the old language Saraswati of Saraswat Brahmins living on the banks of Saraswati river.

The history of the Konkani community is quite ancient

In fact, the Konkani people are people of the Indo-Aryan ethnic linguistic group living in the Konkan region. The culture of the Konkani community is unique. Their costumes, food, traditions, customs, art and architecture are unmatched. Their poetic art is really unique. Its sample adorns the inside and outside parts of Konkani temples. The history of the Konkani community is quite ancient and they are basically Saraswat Brahmins living on the banks of Saraswati river.

It is said that between 2500 and 1700 BC, due to geographical changes, the Saraswati river, which spread in the north, south and east, started disappearing. Due to this, the people living on the banks of Saraswati had to migrate and they mainly moved towards the south and west of the Sahyadri mountain range.

Saraswat Brahmins are actually the Konkani community

The south and west region of the Sahyadri mountain range was generally called Kona. It was also considered the safest corner. This was later called Konkana and is now known as the Konkan region. The Saraswat Brahmins who settled in this region were called Konkani. In the year 1351 AD, the Konkan region, especially the major settlement of Goa, was attacked by Hasan Gangu Jafar of the Bahmani Empire and from the year 1357 AD, his son Ghazni Mohammad started ruling this region, who was extremely cruel. Then during the time of the Turkish ruler of Bijapur, Yusuf Adil Shah, Saraswat Brahmins were also oppressed. Due to all this, Saraswat Brahmins had to migrate to the south once again.

Migration due to attack

Historians say that on 26 February 1510, Portuguese commander Alphonso de Albuquerque and Timmanna Nayak conquered Goa. After this, the local people were forcibly converted to Christianity. The Konkani people were suppressed and their language and culture were attacked. The Vedas and manuscripts that Saraswat Brahmins had saved with them were destroyed. Due to this, the Konkani people again migrated to Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat. That is why people speaking Konkani language are found in Karnataka, Daman, Kerala and Gujarat apart from the coastal areas of Goa and Maharashtra.
