Taiwan News: Taiwan has now got a new President. Taiwanese leader Lai Ching Te, a staunch opponent of China, was sworn in as the new President of Taiwan on Monday. In his very first speech after assuming office, Lai Ching Teh has given a big trailer to China. Taiwan's president has said that "China should stop threatening them." Let us tell you that China has been claiming Taiwan as its share and has often been threatening to merge it into its empire. China's fighter planes and warships often put pressure on Taiwan near its airspace and maritime borders. But now the new President of Taiwan has asked China to desist from these activities. Lai Ching Teh is the leader under whose leadership the island nation will continue to strengthen its defense against China and uphold its policy of genuine independence of self-ruled democracy. China claims Taiwan as its own and has said that it will take control over it by force if necessary. Upon Lai's swearing-in, she was congratulated by her country's leaders and delegations from the 12 countries that have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, as well as the leaders of the United States, Japan, and various European countries. Lai entered politics as mayor of the southern city of Tainan and rose from there to vice president and then president.Sai Ing Wen replaced by Lai Ching TeLai Ching-te replaces former President Tsai Ing-wen, who led Taiwan for eight years amid the COVID-19 pandemic and China's growing military threats, steering the country on a path of economic and social development. Lai took over the responsibility of Vice President during SAI's second term. In 2017, he described himself as an activist working for Taiwan's independence and his statement was strongly condemned by China. He has since softened his stance and now supports maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the possibility of talks with China.Taiwan and America have good relationsTaiwan and America have cordial relations for strategic reasons. Therefore, Lai will take forward SAI's efforts to strengthen relations with America. The US does not formally recognize Taiwan as a country, but is bound by its laws to provide it with the means to defend itself. During Tsai's tenure, Taiwan became the first society in Asia to legalize gay marriage. However, his critics say he tried to avoid political responsibility by leaving the decision to the Supreme Court and a referendum.
