The ICC today released the latest rankings for Test batsmen, with Rohit Sharma overtaking Virat Kohli to reach the fifth spot and become the top-ranked Indian batsman. Meanwhile, England captain Joe Root has regained the number one spot in the rankings after six years. Further, Cheteshwar Pujara jumped three spots to be ranked 15th.

Cricket Desk: England captain Joe Root has achieved the number 1 spot in the ICC Test Batsman rankings after six years. He overtakes New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson at the numero uno spot.

This comes on the back of his thunderous form this year. After sweeping away three centuries in Asia earlier in the year, Joe Root has slammed three consecutive hundreds in the three Tests in the ongoing series against India.

He is currently the leading run-scorer of the series, by a huge margin – the right-hander has amassed 507 runs at an average of 507; the next best is KL Rahul with 252 runs to his name.

Joe Root started the series ranked fifth in the charts, but his incredible form has taken him to the pinnacle position. This form has seen him hit most runs in a calendar year as an England captain and also become England’s most successful Test skipper in terms of matches won.

Rohit Sharma moves above Virat Kohli to enter top 5

Rohit Sharma’s renaissance in Test cricket as an opener has put up a different batsman altogether from what has been known of him in white-ball cricket. He abstinence against then new ball in the England series has been remarkable.

Sharma has now overtaken captain Virat Kohli taking the fifth spot in the batting rankings. He has scored 230 runs at 46.00, with a couple of fifties. Kohli, on the other hand, has scored 124 runs at 24.80

Cheteshwar Pujara, who returned to form with 91 in the second innings at Headingley, progresses three spots to jump up to the 15th position.  Rishabh Pant and Ajinkya Rahane, have dropped points but remain in the top 20.

Amongst bowlers,. James Anderson, who took a five-for at Lord’s, moved up one spot to enter the top five, replacing Neil Wagner. Ollie Robinson, who has taken a couple of five-fors in the series, climbed 9 spaces to 36th spot.

The series stands level at 1-1. The fourth Test at the Kia Oval commences on September 2.
