SGP Committee: The color of Nishan Sahib, a symbol of pride and honor of Khalsa, will no longer be saffron, but its color will be Basanti. Yes, we are not saying this, but this information has been given by issuing a letter on behalf of the most prominent organization of the Sikhs, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). This decision has been taken by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee after the meeting of five Singh Sahibans held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

According to the information shared by the Shiromani Committee, as per the circular number: AT/24/206/17-07-2024 received from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Sri Amritsar Sahib, resolution number: 03/15-07 passed in the meeting of the honorable five Singh Sahibans, this decision has been taken on the basis of 2024. Regarding this, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has said that there was confusion among the Sangat regarding the saffron emblem. Some matters about which came to the notice of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, after which it was discussed.

Saffron colour is misleading

In the meeting of five Singh Sahibans, the issue was discussed that the colour of Nishan Sahib is saffron, but by mistake it resembles the saffron colour, the symbol of Hinduism. Due to this, many times people of the congregation or strangers are unable to differentiate between them and consider both to be the same. This decision has been taken to remove this confusion.

He said that because Sikhism is different from Hinduism. Due to this sometimes some people propagate that Hinduism and Sikhism are the same religion. This decision has been taken to avoid such confusion.

What should the colour be like?

According to the information recorded on page number 15 of Sikh Rehat Maryada, Shri Nishan Sahib can have 2 colours. One is turquoise and the other is spring. Now the Shiromani Committee will select one of these two colours for the dress of Shri Nishan Sahib.

The demand was raised in 2019

In the year 2019, a Punjabi calligrapher Dr. Charanjit Singh Gumtala wrote a letter to the then President of Shiromani Committee Gobind Singh Longowal and the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh requesting that the dress of Kesari Nishan Sahib should not be used in Guru Ghar. They should be replaced by Basanti according to Sikh tradition. After which Sri Akal Takht Sahib discussed it and now on 27 July 2024, orders have been issued in this regard.
