According to religious belief, Maa Shailputri is the daughter of Parvataraja Himalaya and is called the foundation of the universe. The worship of Maa Shailputri is considered helpful in awakening the Muladhara Chakra of the seeker. The Muladhara Chakra is said to be the center of energy, which provides us mental and physical stability. According to the legend, Maa Shailputri's name in her previous birth was Sati, and she was the daughter of King Daksha Prajapati. She was married to Lord Shiva. But King Daksha could not accept Lord Shiva as his son-in-law and due to this he was angry with him.

Once Daksha Prajapati organized a grand yagya, in which he invited all the gods and goddesses, but did not send an invitation to his daughter Sati and Lord Shiva. Goddess Sati could not tolerate this insult and reached the yagya without invitation. Reaching there, she saw that her husband Lord Shiva was being insulted severely. Seeing this atrocity, Sati became very angry and she surrendered herself in the yagya kund.

When Lord Shiva came to know about this incident, he became very angry and ordered Veerbhadra to destroy the yagya. After the destruction of the yagya, Lord Shiva picked up Sati's dead body and roamed around the universe. Seeing their grief, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, which led to the establishment of Shaktipeeths at various places.

In her rebirth, Sati was born in the house of Parvataraja Himalaya and became famous as Parvati. Being the daughter of Himalaya, she was called Shailputri.
