Supreme Court / Sanjeev Khanna will be the next CJI of the country, he will take charge on November 11

Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will take oath on November 11, when the current CJI DY Chandrachud will retire. Justice Khanna's tenure will be a little over six months. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made this announcement on social media.

Supreme Court: Senior judge of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). He was officially appointed to the post on Thursday. Justice Khanna will take oath on November 11, 2024, while the current CJI DY Chandrachud will retire from his post a day earlier, on November 10. DY Chandrachud took over as CJI on November 8, 2022 and his tenure lasted for one year. Justice Sanjiv Khanna's tenure as Chief Justice will be a little more than six months and he will retire on May 13, 2025 next year.

Law Minister's announcement on social media

The country's Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared information about this historic appointment on the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter). He wrote, "Using the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of the country, after consultation with the CJI, appoints Judge Sanjeev Khanna of the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of the country with effect from November 11, 2024." After this announcement, discussions have intensified in the legal field regarding the appointment of Justice Khanna.

CJI DY Chandrachud had recommended

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud had proposed the name of Justice Khanna as his successor. A few days ago, he wrote a letter to the Central Government in this regard, in which he recommended Justice Khanna to be the next CJI. This recommendation of Chandrachud was accepted by the Central Government, and thus the appointment of Justice Khanna was officially announced. In January 2019, Justice Sanjiv Khanna was promoted from the Delhi High Court to the Supreme Court, and since then he has given judgments in many important cases.

Introduction of Justice Sanjiv Khanna

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was born on 14 May 1960. He studied law from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University. In the year 1983, he registered himself as a lawyer with the Delhi Bar Council and started his career. In the early days, he practiced in Tis Hazari Court in Delhi and later started working in the High Court. Justice Khanna served as a judge in the Delhi High Court for 14 years and was promoted to the Supreme Court in 2019.

Justice Khanna is known for his remarkable contribution to the legal field during his long and effective career. He was also the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Service Committee from 17 June 2023 to 25 December 2023, where he played an important role in making judicial services more accessible and effective.
