India / SC notice to UP Govt over changing the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj

Supreme Court has issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government after a plea filed in the court challenged the validity of changing the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj. The state government had officially changed the name of the Allahabad district to Prayagraj in 2018, saying that the name change was a longstanding demand of the people.

The Supreme Court on Monday sought response of the Uttar Pradesh government on a PIL filed by Allahabad Heritage Society challenging renaming of Allahabad to Prayagraj.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant issued notice to the state.

The Centre had on January 1 last year approved renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj.
