Jaipur: While the Taliban have been making headlines across the world following their takeover of Afghanistan, the extremist group’s name has also led to a controversy in the state of Rajasthan, that too on the cricket field. It has emerged that a cricket tournament has been going on in Bhaniyana village in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. A team named ‘Taliban’ participated in the tournament, leading to controversy in the village which is located some 36 kilometres from the strategically important Pokhran.Times Now reported that the area around Pokhran is dominated by the minority community. The area is considered sensitive as the Pokhran firing range is located nearby and the movement of troops keeps on happening there on a regular basis.Organisers of the cricket tournament said the team with the name ‘Taliban’ was included by mistake and the same has been removed from the tournament now.A member of the organising group said the team was removed after the tournament after its first match and a complete ban has been imposed on it. The person said the oversight (of including a team with the name ‘Taliban’) happened due to online scoring this time.He added that on behalf of the organisers and the villagers, they apologise and assure that such a thing will not be repeated.
