Along with this, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the accused. The West Bengal government has been ordered to provide compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of the deceased.

Court's strict stance

On Saturday, January 18, Sealdah Court convicted Sanjay Roy in this case. However, the court did not consider this case as "rarest of the rare". During the verdict, Judge Anirban Das said that this crime is going to shake the moral fabric of the society, but it does not form the basis for the death penalty.

Statement of the accused in the court

Before the announcement of the sentence, Sanjay Roy appealed to the court for mercy, calling himself innocent. He said, "I have been framed. I have not committed any crime. I am being pressured to accept false allegations." But the court found him guilty on the basis of forensic and other evidence.

CBI's role and court's comment

The investigation of the incident was handed over to the CBI after the order of the High Court. The CBI recorded the statements of more than 120 witnesses in the case and conducted a camera trial for two months. The CBI told the court that the crime of the accused is the "rarest of the rare" and if a strict punishment is not given, the society will lose faith in the justice system.

Case: Crossing the limits of brutality and ruthlessness

This heinous incident took place on the night of 8-9 August 2024 in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The 31-year-old female doctor was first raped and then brutally murdered. In this case, forensic evidence played an important role in convicting Sanjay Roy.

The verdict came after 162 days

The court gave its verdict in this case 162 days after the incident. Initially, the Kolkata Police was investigating this case, but later after the intervention of the High Court, the case was handed over to the CBI.

Message for the society

The court said in its decision that by giving strict punishment to the culprit in this case, a message is being given that any kind of negligence regarding women's safety will not be tolerated. This decision is necessary to maintain the faith of the society in the justice system.

This case not only raises questions on women's safety, but also highlights the sensitivity of the justice system and the need for prompt action.
