Bangladesh Violence: Bangladesh, which was known for its secular character and cultural diversity, is now facing a serious political and social crisis. During the reign of Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Mohammad Yunus, there has been an unexpected increase in the incidents of attacks on minorities in the country. This situation is being seen as the worst period since the country's independence in 1971.Expectations and disappointments from the Nobel winnerAfter the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the post, Mohammad Yunus was being seen with hope. People thought that a Nobel winner would work to take the country out of the crisis and give stability to the society. But on the contrary, incidents of violence and human rights violations on minority communities have increased rapidly during Yunus' tenure.Rakesh Kher, editor of the English cluster of TV9 Network, says, "The worst violation of human rights has taken place in Bangladesh in recent weeks. This situation is extremely dangerous for the democracy and social balance of the country."Silence of the international communityThe silence of international powers on the violence against minorities is also worrying. News9 Plus editor Sandeep Unnithan said that the Five Eyes Alliance (a coalition of Western intelligence agencies) has turned a blind eye to these incidents. One reason for this could be the alleged role of the US in the establishment of the interim government in Bangladesh.Saivion Rodrigues, founder and editor-in-chief of Goa Chronicle, described Mohammad Yunus as a "puppet" of the CIA and said,"The conspiracy to remove Sheikh Hasina was hatched by the US intelligence agency CIA. Yunus is inclined towards Islamic fundamentalism, which is taking Bangladesh away from a secular nation."Potential threats to IndiaThe current situation in Bangladesh is also a matter of serious concern for India. Rodrigues believes that Yunus' support to Islamic fundamentalism could become a new headache for India."Pakistan is already an Islamic neighbour for India. If Bangladesh also moves in this direction, it could be dangerous for regional stability."In addition, issues such as trade, border security and immigration between India-Bangladesh could also be affected by the current political instability.Crisis looming over democracyThe interim government was expected to conduct free and fair elections, but the Yunus government has not taken any concrete steps for this. Instead, efforts are being made to strengthen the grip on power and suppress the opposition.Savino Rodrigues says that the citizens of Bangladesh will have to raise their voice unitedly for their democratic rights. The future of Bangladesh: Crisis and hopesThis period is extremely challenging for Bangladesh. On the one hand, the increasing atrocities on minorities and the spread of fundamentalism are damaging the social fabric of the country. On the other hand, the silence of the international community and the inaction of the government is making this crisis deeper.Bangladesh now needs to take concrete steps towards a strong democratic structure, protection of minorities, and protection of human rights. If this does not happen, this crisis can have serious consequences not only for Bangladesh but for the whole of South Asia.
