Pradeep Mishra: A stampede broke out on Friday at the Shiv Mahapuran Katha going on in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The stampede took place on the sixth day of the Katha being held in Shatabdinagar area, where more than one lakh devotees had participated. During the stampede, many people fell and some were injured due to being crushed. Police and administration have reached the spot and started rescue work.

How did the incident happen?

According to sources, the crowd of women and elderly people was stopped by bouncers at the entry gate. During this, the crowd became uncontrolled and started pushing and shoving. This created a stampede situation, and people started falling on each other.

Many VVIP devotees were also present in the Katha, but due to the stampede, there was chaos at the Katha site. The administration immediately took the injured people to the hospital and tried to control the crowd.

After the incident, both Meerut Police and the organizers became active. To maintain peace, the officials appealed to the people not to pay attention to any rumors. 1000 policemen were already deployed at the venue, and the pandal was also being monitored through drones.

SP Traffic Raghavendra Mishra said that traffic was diverted due to Shiv Mahapuran Katha, but the situation worsened due to heavy crowd. The organizing committee had created 7 parking spaces for vehicles and arranged for clean water, food and other facilities for the devotees.
